Climate Change

The WI has a proud history of taking action to protect the environment.

Over the years the WI has cleaned up our beaches, stood up for the honeybee and campaigned for wide areas of special beauty. In recent times, this concern for our natural environment has seen members rally against climate change.

Climate change is already affecting the things we love. It can be seen through increased flooding, summer heatwaves and the decline of bee populations. It is changing the seasons, disturbing the journeys of migrating birds and affecting crops and flowers.

The WI is a founding member of The Climate Coalition, a group of 130 organisations including The National Trust, WWF and Christian Aid, who work to protect what we love from climate change and lobby politicians to prioritise tackling climate change.

Show the Love

We work together during February and ask members to make and share green hearts to Show The Love for all they want to protect from climate change on Valentine’s Day. We will be taking part in Show the Love again for 2020 and will have a community resource pack available with ideas on how to get involved and a new craft project for members. Sign up here to receive the pack.

The Time is Now mass lobby

On 26th June over 200 WI members came to Westminster for The Time is Now lobby to speak to their MPs about protecting the environment from climate change. They were part of the largest environment lobby in history, with 12,000 people attending and over 350 MPs lobbied.
